Arrows Sr. Academy vs Quebec Recap
Arrows fans that headed down to York University early on Saturday were treated to an incredibly entertaining game rugby prior to the MLR match. The Arrows Sr. Academy battled Rugby Quebec in their first match of 2023.
The match got off to a flying start for the Academy as Brenden Black took a slick pass from Oakville Crusaders teammate Jacob Ince and shot through a gap in the Quebec defence to open the scoring. Quebec would strike back as flyhalf Lucas Dyts finished off a series of offloads. The try and conversion temporarily put Quebec out in front 10-7.
With the Academy pressing, Quebec had a nice defensive stand that resulted in a penalty. However, their kick would not find touch and winger Josh Dusome would run it back for a try. Quebec would soon add two ore tries from lock Brahim Mahmoudi and flanker Jackson Marquadt to take a 21-10 lead into the sheds.
Maxime Perreault-Briere would add an early penalty before a Maxime Plante try would extend the lead to 29-10. The Academy would not go down easy. They used the width of the pitch well and flanker Max Goodwin had a nasty offload to Dusome as he scored his 2nd try of the match. Soon after, reserve prop Aidan Emmens would crash over to make it a one-possession game.
The Academy’s attack continued to press. Quebec took a few penalties and were handed a yellow card. Despite that, the visitor’s defence would hold and Quebec walked away with a 29-24 victory.
The Academy will play the Atlantic Selects in a Coast-to-Coast Cup preview on Sunday April 23, 2023. Kickoff will be at 1:30pm with the big club taking on the Seattle Seawolves at 4pm. If you are planning on going to the MLR game, I would highly recommend checking out the Academy’s curtain raiser. It’s a high quality of rugby and a chance to see the next wave of Arrows’ players. Additionally, many of the MLR Arrows were in attendance and they probably spent more time signing autographs than watching the game. So, why not make next Sunday an Arrows double-header?
Following the match, we were joined by Hank Stevenson and Brenden Black. You can check out their post match interviews below.
